Dining Hall Tables - Rectangular Vs Round Tables

The majority of venues use circular tables for weddings. Circular tables have the benefit of creating an atmosphere where all guests at the table can communicate fairly easily with one another. However, the rectangular table offers some new and exciting possibilities.

Depending on the size of the venue, rectangular tables can be laid out in a U shape with the bridal party seated at the cross-point. This allows the wedding party to see all of their guests without anyone having their back to the bride and groom. This is also more convenient for guests when toasts and speeches are being given as the room becomes much more open to everyone.

Designers have to work harder to distinguish a unique look with circular tables, because that is what guests expect to see when they enter the dining hall. There are tablecloths and candles, but changing the design of a room with rectangular tables creates an atmosphere reminiscent of kings, queens and their court, as they sit together and feast.

Because people will be seated either directly to the side of one another, or immediately across the table, decorations can be fairly tricky, so as not to block anyone's view. An elegant way to do this is with a raised floral vase with glass candleholders. This way, the bouquets tower above the guests' heads. Candles will also offer a romantic renaissance feel to the festivities. Letting soft light filter down.

Another option is to have the head table raised above the other tables, so the wedding party can feel as if they are the center of the universe.

No matter which type of table you choose, table settings and decorations will create an atmosphere designed to delight. Flowers can incorporate a theme color or flower that is special to the bride. Flower petals may be strewn across tables and votive candles or pillar candles will cast a soft glow over the festivities.

Lighting will be especially important depending on the type of venue. If they have bright lights and you want a more romantic atmosphere, then table lighting and decorative lights, or light candy can be employed. If the venue is fairly dimly lit, you may want to bring in circular globes lit from inside that can bring added light. This also works well for outdoor venues that have trees or other shrubbery to hang the lights on.

Whether you choose a rectangular or circular table, it is really an individual choice. Circular tables are more in fad right now and allow easy open conversation with all guests at the table. However, those seated with their back to the bride and groom may feel left out. Rectangular tables on the other hand, create a very intimate and regal atmosphere. Here, the bridal table is really the center of attention and every one is allowed a view of and enjoyment of all the ceremonies of the night.
